12 Days of Christmas: Day 5

Greetings and welcome to Day 5 of the 12 Days of Christmas at A Walk Down Memory Lane!  It's Scarlett with you today and I will be sharing what today's deal is soon, but thought I'd share some inspiration for you first!

I don't know about you, but I adore making and giving out handmade Christmas cards.  The thing is though there are a lot of times when you may think well what in the world am I putting all this time and effort into a card for when it may just get thrown away? Well, I have the solution for you!!  Turn your card into an ornament so the recepient can keep it for years to come.

Here's the card:

Simply start off with a circle card base and layer up some circles and a sentiment in any way you would like creating the look of an ornament.

Inside:

Loop some twine or ribbon and add a button on top with a glue dot and you have created the piece that will allow this card to hang on a tree branch.  All the receipient needs to do is cut off the front half of the circle and they will have a new ornament for their tree.

This gift idea is great to give to someone special.  I saw this clear card box in large at AWDML and knew exactly what to do with it. Its sturdy and acid free. It great for paper and photo storage. The ideas are endless with this so I made a card set to give away as a gift.

For the Box 1. Cut 5x12 of the Echo Park Carol paper and using your Martha Stewart Scoring board, you want to score at 1,2,6 1/2 and 7 1/2 from the 12 inch of the paper. Then cut a 1x12 piece of paper and score it the same way. Adhere the 5x12 onto the box then the small piece on top near the bottom

2. Cut out a Echo Park Oh Christmas Tree Card and adhere to a green scrap of cardstock; Glue down on top of the box

3. You are done...now for the cards

The Cards

I made 6 cards and have envelops to go with them. I created 3 of each style seen below

* Cut the Bazzill Cardstock to make the cards(4 1/4 x 11) total of 6 bases

Card #1

* 2Cut 2 pieces of PP - 4x5 and 1 1/2x4; Ink them and adhere them to the base of your card

* Add Santa sticker as your embellishment

Card #2

* Cut 2 pieces of PP- 4x5 and 2x5; Ink it and adhere to the card

* Add pop dots to ornament sticker and adhere to the card on top of the 2x5 strip of pp

Step by Step Circle Card

Happy Tuesday!  Today I am going to share with you step by step instructions to make an adorable circle shaped card using October Afternoon's Fly a Kite collection.

Here is the card we will be making:

Let's get started.

Step 1: Cut a 5" circle card base out of cardstock and a 4" circle out of patterned paper.  Using a border punch (I used the EK Success embossed scalloped one) create a couple strips of borders to go along the outside edge of the 4" circle.  You will need to create cuts in between each scallop in order for it to go around the edge.  Glue border around back of 4" circle.  Paper pierce each scallop then glue scalloped circle to card base.  Tip: to make paper piercing go a bit quicker, place a piece of foam under the areas you are piercing.

Step 2: Cut out a 3.5" circle from patterned paper.  Punch out 3 1.5" scalloped circles.  Pick out a 2" cardstock circle journal sticker.  Glue 3.5" circle to center of scalloped circle.  Stick journal sticker a bit off center and toward the top of 3.5" circle.  Arrange punched circle in a cluster along edge of journal sticker and use some dimensional adhesive to adhere. 1 scalloped circle will be glued down flat; the remaining 2 will be raised at slightly different heights.

Step 3: Gather Bo Bunny ribbon, creating pleats, and secure with Tim Holtz Tiny Attacher.  Cut out 6 flowers from patterned paper.  Glue gathered ribbon around outside edge of 3.5" circle.  Glue 3 flowers at end of ribbon above arranged scalloped circles.  Place remaining 3 flowers in center of punched scalloped circles using dimensional adhesive.

Step 4: Add some cardstock word stickers and the letter U to the journal circle.  Add pearls to the centers of flowers.

There you have it, a cutie lil' circle card for that special friend in your life.

It's All About Layers!

Hi There Everybody, Happy Thursday!  It's Scarlett here today to share with you some ideas and a technique for layering with your punches. 

First up, a technique for covering up shapes with border punches.  I think the first time I ever saw this done was by our very own Nicole.  I fell in love with the LO she created using this technique and stored it away in my brain for later use. Let's get started!

Step 1: Prepare Your Paper

To begin this technique, you are going to need the shape you would like to cover and enough punched border strips to cover it.  You will also need to create a strip with both edges punched.  I created mine a bit wider than the rest of the strips I was using.  For this project, I used a 3.5" circle, which took 12 strips to cover, not counting the center strip.

Step 2: Cover Up Your Shape

You'll have to forgive me because I got so engrossed in creating I forgot to take a picture of this step and recreated it.  In this step, you are going to cover up your circle with the border strips.  Place a strip at the bottom and glue, then place a strip at the top and glue.  Continue until your strips meet in the middle.  I worked alternately at the top and bottom, to ensure I would meet in the middle evenly.  Then place your double punched strip across the middle.  Trim off excess strips from the sides.

Step 3: Embellish Your Circle

I chose to add a punched scalloped edge around the outside to give my circle the appearance of a flower.  Then I topped it off with a punched circle and butterfly.

Step 4: Finished Project

This technique does take a bit of time with all the punching involved, but it sure is worth it.  I think it creates such a pretty background.

Here are some other ideas for layering up your projects using punches:

Layer Your Shapes (in my case circles)

Create dimensional layers with your punches and then add a punched edge around to finish off.

Use your punches in combination with other supplies in your stash and patterns cut from your paper to create embellishments on your pages.

Layer borders to create depth and interest on your LOs

Using a couple different border punches along with straight edged paper makes for delightful layers.

I hope I have been able to kick start your mojo thinking layers.  So, the next time you are working on a project bust out those punches and layer them on up!

Tuesday Tip & Technique

Hi Everyone!  Happy Tuesday to you!

I really have been enjoying using masks and mists lately on my projects, but the one thing always putting a road block in front of my creativity is not having the perfect mask.  It always seems I want a shape I don't have or isn't available on the market.  I have no worries any longer since finding the Tim Holtz Idea-ology masking sheets in the store!  With these sheets, you're possibilities for creating a mask are endless.  You can draw out what you would like to have become your mask, or if you're like me and a little intimidated by that option, you can use your die cut machine and favorite dies!  There are complete instructions on the package to make creating your own a mask a successful and easy experience.

I decided to try out using the dies.  Here is a picture of the materials I needed in order to create the mask.

As you can see, all I needed was my Sissix (any machine will work as I am sure you may be a bit more updated than me. LOL!), the masking sheets, and a couple of dies.

What I really like about this product, beyond creating custom masks, is the masks you create will have adhesive on one side that is easily lifted up from your project.  This makes it soo much easier to get a clean masked image.

Here is a card I created using the dragonfly (I have been wanting a dragonfly mask for awhile now!):

Isn't that pretty??!  I wish you could see how much shimmer this card has!  The photo just does not do this justice at all.  I used the Shimmerz Spritz and am really pleased with how the color came out over the patterned paper and how clean and obvious the masked image is.

So, the next time you are thinking about how fabulous a masked image would be for your project, but shy away...don't!  Just head on over to the store and pick yourself up some masking sheets and create away!

Friday Sketch Inspiration

Hi there everyone!  Happy Friday to you!  I have a cool sketch to bring you for today to help you chill out, relax, and scrap during these hot days lots of us have been having.  The sketch I chose to use is from the fabulous Lucy Chesna. I just adore her sketches and am never disappointed by what I can create with them.  This week I have a card sketch to share.

Tutorial Challenge: Alter Your Stamps!

Hey all, it's Erica!

Today I'm going to show you a fun way to alter your stamps. 

Now, this works best with simpler line art stamps but if you're ambitious (and way more artistic than me) the sky's the limit!  :D

I'm using this stamp from CC Designs, Pumpkin Emma.  I'm going to alter it so that I only have the image of the girl to work with and not the wagon.

First up, I inked up only the portion of the stamp I wanted to use. 

 

Then, using a baby wipe, I carefully wiped the ink off of the handle of the wagon. 

 

Try to keep as much of the girl inked as possible.

Here she is, without her wagon and without a bit of her hand, dress and apron, too!  Don't worry, we'll fix up!

Now, find a pen whose nib width matches your image.  I chose a pen with a .01mm nib for this stamp.  Then, draw in her missing parts. 

Here she is all redrawn!  It actually is a lot easier than it looks.  Trust me!  :)

Product Review: Clear Boxes for Cards

 Hi guys, it's Erica! 

I've got a quick product review for you today that's going to come in very handy this season. 

I found these clear boxes for cards in the card supplies section over at the AWDML store, along with quite a few other goodies that you really need to check out!  ;)  I found card kits, card bases, envelopes and even envelope templates!  But, lets get back to the clear boxes.  :)

These beauties are great!  They are actually truly clear, not tinted like the above picture shows, and they are only $.75 each!  They are the perfect way to present someone with a selection of your own handmade cards.  This box fits quite a few A2 sized cards and envelopes and there is another size for you larger cards that runs $1.25.  Either box is a great way to add a lot of punch to a card gift set for a small amount of money. 

I packaged up a bunch of birthday cards for my Grandmother to send to her friends.  I'm going to give them to her for Mother's Day or her birthday. 

I decorated the out side of the box with a strip of cardstock layered over a border punched strip of cardstock and mounted a sentiment stamped on a label shape cut out with my Slice on the front. 

  

If you don't have a birthday or two coming up you could also package up some thank you cards for bridal and baby showers or some cute monogrammed cards as a wedding present.

Tuesday's Technique-Paper Piecing with your Stamps!

Hi ladies, it's me, Erica!  I love getting to post on Tuesdays as it's all about Tips and Techniques.  My new favorite stamping technique is paper piecing.  I'd seen it around the web but never really tried it before.  Well, the Gizmos and Gears stamp set I picked from Lizzie Annie Designs was just screaming for paper piercing so I jumped in and did it!

I gotta say, it was pretty dang awesome!  (Anyone else using words like dude and awesome a lot more since the I Love the '80's crop?) 

Here's how I did it.  First, I stamped my image on white paper and set it aside.  This is going to be your base image for assembling your piecing.  Next, I stamped that cute little guy on two different sheets of patterned paper from Bella Blvd.  Then, I grabbed my handy, dandy craft knife and went to work cutting on the stamped lines around the pieces I wanted in each color.  I just love fussy cutting so this was my favorite part. 

Finally, grab your base image and start glueing down the pieces.  I used a glue pen for the smaller pieces and my regular adhesive for the larger ones.  Once you've got your piece assembled, you're done!

The really nice thing about this technique is that I can take the leftover pieces and use them to make another robot.  Sweet!

Rockin' the 80's Challenge #10 - Layers

Welcome to the final day of challenges here at A Walk Down Memory Lane's Design Team blog!  We've had some GREAT challenges issued here by the Design Team, and I hope you'll have time to play along with us.  Remember, in order to be eligible for our prize packages you'll need to upload your direct link to your project using the Mr. Linky up above.

To finish off our 80's challenges, I want you to take a trip back to the 80's and remember what the 80's were most famous for...EXCESS!  We couldn't get enough stuff in our lives, so we built bigger houses.  We couldn't have big enough shoulders, so we wore shoulder pads. 

So for our last challenge today, create a card that has to be HAND-DELIVERED because it has too much stuff on it to be mailed!  LOL  Create a card that has an obscene amount of lumpy-bumpy embellishments or heavy embellishments!  Remember, MORE is BETTER!  :)

For today's card, I grabbed a bunch of NEW stuff!  :)  Paper, embellishments, etc are almost exclusively from some of our new CHA shipments.  It is also one of the cards we'll be making during our Copic Class today at the store.

First, I started with some Studio Calico papers.  The card base is 4 1/4" x 5 1/2".  I inked the edges of the papers with my Tim Holtz Ink Blending tool to soften up the edges a bit.

Next, I layered a Bella Blvd fabric flower.  I took apart the layered flower, and colored it in with a Copic marker so it looks a little "marbled".  My next layer is the little Fancy Pants tag stamped with a Heidi Grace greeting stamp.  I also added in a little Maya Road trinket pin.  Next layer is more Studio Calico paper, and some Jenni Bowlin buttons in white.  They are popped up with some foam adhesive, and I tied a little bow with some jute.  I stamped the Woodware daffodils on our Copic cardstock and colored them in with Copic markers.  I stamped them 4 times.  I colored three in and added the 4th little flower on pop dots again.  The other 3 I fussy cut out, and two of them I layered on pop dots.  The middle one I adhered flat, but pop dotted the little extra flower.

Rocking the 80's Challenge Day 3 - COLORS of the 80's

Happy Hump Day everyone!  Welcome to the 3rd day of challenges here at A Walk Down Memory Lane's Design Team blog!

Today, we're going to talk color...I was an 80's girl as well...I remember listening to Madonna's Material Girl, Michael Jackson's Bad on my tape deck player during junior high.  I remember lots of black in clothes with some bright colors thrown in for good measure!  LOL

I grew up in northwest Iowa, and not in California, but I remember watching movies and TV shows showing off these CRAZY guys riding their skateboards in LA in Venice Beach.

So, today's challenge is to make a card using some fabulously 80's colors.  My card today uses a black backdrop and then a HUGE splash of orange and yellow with a bit of blue and green for good measure.
